Armen Takhtajan | Merits | Demerits |

Armen Takhtajan: The latest version of the Takhtajan classification is published in 1980 in Botanical review. According to him, the angiosperms are monophyletic and developed from an ancient group of gymnosperms. He is adherent to taxonomy.

Some of the criteria used by Takhtajan in determining the advancement of flowering plants:

(a) Woody plants are primitive compared to herbaceous plants.

(b) Delicious plants are evolved from evergreen plants.

(c) Parallel venation is most advanced.

Takhtajan divided Magnoliophyta (Angiospermae) into two classes Magnoliopsida (Dicots) and Liliopsida (monocots).

Takhtajan (1980) recognizes a total of 92 orders and 410 families among angiosperms.

Merits of the system of Takhtajan:

(1) Dicots are discussed prior to monocots.

(2) Dicots begin with magnolias which are considered to be most primitive living angiosperms.

(3) In this system, families are homogenous units made up of closely related genera.

Demerits of the system of Takhtajan :

One strong demerit is the extremely narrowly defined taxa in this system has resulted in the unwarranted splitting of the related groups.
