Serotaxonomy and Serotaxonomic importance

Serotaxonomy: The application or utility of serology in solving taxonomic problems is called serotaxonomy. The study of antigen and antibody reactions is called serology.

Serology is useful in the following ways :

(a) It expresses similarities and dissimilarities amongst different taxa, and these data are helpful in taxonomy. It determines the degree of similarity between species, genera, and families, etc.

(b) It helps in comparing nonmorphological characteristics, the knowledge of which is useful in taxonomy.

 (c) Single protein from different taxa is also compared by serological techniques.

In serotaxonomical studies, the protein extract of plant or animal origin, i.e; antigen is injected into the bloodstream of a rabbit or an experimental animal, to form the antibodies. In response to a specific antigen-specific antibody is found. The serum called antiserum is then made to react invitro with the antigenic protein of other taxa, the affinities of which are to be determined.

Serotaxonomic importance :

(1) Fairbrothers and johnson separated six species of Bromus on the basis of serological studies.

(2) On the base of serological studies, Fairbrothers and johnson suggested that the genera of Magnolia and Michelia show the closet affinity with Magnoliaceae.

(3) On the basis of serological studies, Mez and Ziegenspeck prepared a Stammbaum or family tree for the entire plant kingdom.

(4)On the basis of serological studies, Fairbrother supported the view that taxa of Oleoideae evolved from those of Jasminoideae.

(5) On the basis of serological studies, Fairbrothers supported the separation of Illicium from Magnoliaceae to Illicaceae.
